On many Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones the first volume step above mute is still too loud, in earbuds at night most of all. It is not a fault in your phone. Android sets the lowest step as a fixed fraction of the maximum, and a phone tuned to sound loud through its speakers ends up with a loud first step. HyperOS has a few useful settings around that floor; none of them moves it. Here is what each one does.
Turn on Adjust media sound in multiple apps (Settings, Sound & vibration, Additional settings) to lower one app on its own, and for Bluetooth earbuds try Disable absolute volume in Developer options. If the lowest step is still too loud, Volume Control: Quiet Dial adds six quieter steps below your phone's minimum, for every app at once.
After you install, open it once and allow it to display over other apps. That is the entire setup. Everything is open for seven days; after that the dial needs one payment, once, inside the app. No subscription.
Why the lowest step is still loud
Every Android phone divides the range between silence and full output into a fixed number of steps, and the step above mute is a fraction of the maximum, not a set loudness. On a phone tuned for strong speakers that fraction can land loud, and sensitive earbuds sitting in your ear make it louder still. Nothing in Settings lets you place a level below that first step. The full explanation.
Free fixes in HyperOS and MIUI
Adjust media sound in multiple apps Per app, while it plays
Xiaomi's own volume mixer. On recent phones it is under Settings, Sound & vibration, Additional settings; on older MIUI phones it is under Sound & vibration, Sound assistant. Turn it on, play something, press a volume key, and tap the small round button that appears next to the volume bar to get a slider for each app that is playing.
It is the right tool when one app is louder than the rest. It is not a system-wide floor: it works per app, and only for the apps playing at that moment.
Disable absolute volume (Bluetooth) Depends on the earbuds
Turn on Developer options by tapping OS version (MIUI version on older phones) seven times under Settings, About phone, Detailed info and specs. Then open Settings, Additional settings, Developer options and switch on Disable absolute volume. It splits the phone's volume from the earbuds' own volume, which helps with some earbuds and makes others louder. Step by step, and why it can reset itself.
Sound effects and equalizer Changes the tone, not the floor
Turning off sound enhancements or lowering an equalizer can make audio sound softer, but the effect is uneven and it does not add a level below the first step.
The app's own volume That app only
Some video and music apps have their own volume slider. Where it exists it helps in that app, and nowhere else.
Going below the minimum
Six quieter steps under the device minimum Goes below the floor
Quiet Dial lowers Android's own output on top of the normal volume: one floating slider with normal volume above your phone's minimum line and six quiet steps below it, 5 dB each, down to 30 dB under the hardware minimum. It applies to every app at once, through the speaker, wired headphones and Bluetooth. What -30 dB means in practice.
It lowers media, ringtones, notifications, alarms and app calls such as WhatsApp when the phone plays them as media. Regular phone calls run on a separate path that no app can lower. On a few phone and Bluetooth headset pairs the quiet steps have no effect, so check yours during the seven free days.
Keeping it running on Xiaomi
HyperOS and MIUI are strict with apps that work in the background, and a volume control has to stay running to keep the level down. If the dial ever closes by itself, or does not come back after a restart while it was on, open the app's page under Settings, Apps, find Quiet Dial, and allow Autostart and set its battery use to No restrictions. The exact labels vary between versions.
Quieter than your Xiaomi allows
The levels between the first step and mute, for every app at once. No root, no ads, no tracking, no account.
After you install, open it once and allow it to display over other apps. That is the entire setup. Everything is open for seven days; after that the dial needs one payment, once, inside the app. No subscription.
FAQ
- Why is my Xiaomi phone too loud even at the lowest volume?
- Android sets the step above mute as a fixed fraction of the maximum, and on a phone tuned for strong speakers that fraction can still be loud, especially in earbuds. HyperOS and MIUI have no setting that places a level below the first step.
- Where is the per-app volume on Xiaomi?
- On recent phones: Settings, Sound & vibration, Additional settings, Adjust media sound in multiple apps. On older MIUI phones it is under Sound & vibration, Sound assistant. Then press a volume key while something plays and tap the round button beside the volume bar.
- How do I disable absolute volume on a Xiaomi phone?
- Tap OS version (MIUI version on older phones) seven times under Settings, About phone, Detailed info and specs to turn on Developer options, then open Settings, Additional settings, Developer options and switch on Disable absolute volume. Reconnect your earbuds afterwards.
- Can I lower the volume below the minimum on Xiaomi without root?
- Yes. Quiet Dial lowers Android's own output below the minimum step, with six quieter steps of 5 dB each down to 30 dB under the hardware minimum, without root. On a few phone and Bluetooth headset pairs the quiet steps have no effect, so check yours during the seven free days.
- Why did the volume control close by itself on my Xiaomi?
- HyperOS and MIUI can stop apps that run in the background. Open the app's page under Settings, Apps, allow Autostart and set battery use to No restrictions.
