You turn the volume down one press at a time, and the step just above mute is still loud: a podcast at night, a white-noise track next to a sleeping child, cartoons in the back of the car, or sensitive earbuds. It is not a fault: it comes from how Android sets its volume steps, on budget tablets and on the Tab S series alike. This page shows the free Samsung settings first, then the one thing that goes lower.
Install Sound Assistant from the Galaxy Store and set Change step volume to 1, so each key press is a much smaller step. If the quietest level is still too loud, that is the bottom of your tablet's own range, and no Samsung setting goes below it. Volume Control: Quiet Dial adds six quieter steps under the Galaxy Tab's minimum.
After you install, open it once and allow it to display over other apps. That is the entire setup. Everything is open for seven days; after that the dial needs one payment, once, inside the app. No subscription.
Why the first step is still loud
Android's volume steps are fixed points on a curve, and the first step above mute is a fixed share of the tablet's maximum output. A tablet's speakers are built for a whole room; the Galaxy Tab A9+, for example, has four speakers with Dolby Atmos, and the Tab A9 has two. In a quiet bedroom at night, or in earbuds that are very sensitive, that first fixed step can simply be more sound than you want, and One UI offers no step below it.
Free Samsung settings, in order
1. Sound Assistant, step volume 1 Real improvement
Install Sound Assistant from the Galaxy Store, open it and set Change step volume to 1. Each press then moves the media slider by one fine step instead of a big jump, so the first step above mute lands lower than before. If your first step was only a little too loud, this is often the whole fix. Sound Assistant set up step by step.
2. Make the keys control media Fewer surprises
In Sound Assistant you can make the volume keys always adjust media volume, so pressing down lowers the video or the story, not the notification sound.
3. Media volume limit Caps the top, not the bottom
Settings > Sounds and vibration > Volume, then the three-dot menu, then Media volume limit. It stops the volume going above a level you choose, which is useful on a child's tablet. Samsung says it applies when you use headphones or Bluetooth speakers, and it does not make the lowest step any quieter.
4. Bluetooth earbuds Depends on the earbuds
If the problem is only with Bluetooth earbuds, separating the tablet's volume from the earbuds' own can help on some pairs. Disable absolute volume, step by step.
What none of these can do The hard limit
Finer steps divide the volume range; a limit trims the top of it. Neither moves the bottom. If the quietest level is still too loud, you have reached the floor of the tablet's own range.
When only video calls are loud
If films and music behave but a video call stays loud, it is usually the call volume, which is a separate slider. Press volume down while the call is running. A calling app that sends its sound down the call path can stay louder than media even at the lowest call step; on some devices no app that lowers the volume can reach that path, so test your own calling app before relying on it.
Going below the minimum
Six quieter steps under the tablet's minimum Goes below the floor
Quiet Dial works one level down. Instead of dividing the volume range, it lowers Android's own output on top of it: one floating slider with normal volume in even steps above your tablet's minimum line, and six quiet steps below it, 5 dB each, down to 30 dB under the minimum. What -30 dB means in practice.
It lowers media, ringtones, notifications, alarms, and app calls such as WhatsApp when the tablet plays them as media. Regular phone calls and keyboard sounds run on paths no app can lower this way. On a few tablet and Bluetooth headset pairs the quiet steps have no effect, so check yours during the seven free days.
When the first step is still too loud
Samsung's settings make the steps smaller or cap the top. Quiet Dial adds the steps that are missing below the bottom. No root, no ads, no tracking, no account.
After you install, open it once and allow it to display over other apps. That is the entire setup. Everything is open for seven days; after that the dial needs one payment, once, inside the app. No subscription.
FAQ
- Why is my Galaxy Tab so loud on the lowest volume step?
- Because the first step above mute is a fixed share of the tablet's maximum output, and a Galaxy Tab's speakers are built to fill a room. On a quiet night, or with sensitive earbuds, that first step can still be more than you want, and One UI has no setting below it.
- Does the Media volume limit make the lowest step quieter?
- No. It caps the top of the range, not the bottom, and Samsung says it applies when you use headphones or Bluetooth speakers. It is a good way to stop the volume going too high, but it does not lower the first step.
- Does Sound Assistant work on a Galaxy Tab?
- Yes, it is a Samsung app for Galaxy phones and tablets, from the Galaxy Store. Set Change step volume to 1 for much finer steps. It divides the range more finely but cannot go below the bottom of it.
- Only video calls are too loud on my tablet. Why?
- During a call, the volume keys control the call volume, which is a separate slider from media. Lower it with the keys while the call is running. If a calling app stays loud even at the lowest call step, the app is using the call audio path, and on some devices no app that lowers the volume can reach that path.
- What can go below the lowest volume step on a Galaxy Tab?
- Lowering Android's own output below the minimum. Quiet Dial does that with six quieter steps of 5 dB each, down to 30 dB under the tablet's minimum, for media, ringtones, notifications and alarms. On a few tablet and Bluetooth headset pairs the quiet steps have no effect, so check yours during the seven free days.
- Is it safe for a child's tablet?
- It only makes sound quieter and has no ads, no account and no internet permission. It is a convenience tool, not hearing protection, and it does not stop anyone from turning the volume up again with the keys.
