Samsung Sound Assistant and a volume that is too loud

Samsung's free Sound Assistant is the first thing Galaxy owners are told to install when the lowest volume is too loud. Here is how to set it up for that problem, what it genuinely improves, and the one thing it cannot do.

If your Galaxy phone or tablet is still too loud on the lowest volume step, someone has probably told you to get Sound Assistant. It is good advice as a first step: it is free, it is made by Samsung, and for some people it is enough. For others it gets close and then stops. This page explains why, so you know which group you are in within five minutes.

Short answer

Install Sound Assistant from the Galaxy Store and set Change step volume to 1. Each press of the volume key then moves the media slider in much finer steps, so the first step above mute sits lower than before. What it cannot do is go below the bottom of the slider's own range. If the quietest level is still too loud, Volume Control: Quiet Dial adds six quieter steps below your device's minimum, on any Android phone or tablet.

After you install, open it once and allow it to display over other apps. That is the entire setup. Everything is open for seven days; after that the dial needs one payment, once, inside the app. No subscription.

What Sound Assistant is

Sound Assistant is a free Samsung app for Galaxy phones and tablets, available from the Galaxy Store and also listed among Samsung's Good Lock modules. It is a toolbox for sound: the size of each volume step, separate volumes for individual apps, what the volume keys control, and the look of the volume panel. Samsung describes its volume control as 150 steps of fine volume. It only runs on Samsung devices, and its menus change between versions, so the names below may differ slightly on yours.

Set it up for a volume that is too loud

  1. Open the Galaxy Store, search for Sound Assistant, and install it.
  2. Open it and find Change step volume. By default each press of a volume key moves the media slider by 10 fine steps. Set it to 1.
  3. Optional: make the volume keys control media volume rather than the ringtone, so the keys always adjust what you are listening to.
  4. Optional: use individual app volume to give one noisy app a lower level than the rest.
  5. Play something, press volume down until you reach the first step above mute, and listen.

If that first step is now quiet enough, you are done, and you did not need anything else.

What it does well

Finer steps, a lower first step Real improvement

With step volume at 1, every press is a small move instead of a big jump, and the first step above mute lands lower than the default first step. For people whose lowest default step was only slightly too loud, that is often the whole fix.

Per-app levels and media keys Useful control

Individual app volume lets one loud app sit lower than the others, and assigning the keys to media volume stops the classic surprise of turning down the ringer when you meant the music.

What it cannot do

Go below the bottom of the range The hard limit

Finer steps divide the slider's range more finely; they do not extend it downwards. The quietest level Sound Assistant can reach is still the quietest level your Galaxy's own volume range can produce. If that level is louder than you want, more steps inside the same range cannot get you under it. That is why people who already have Sound Assistant still search for this problem.

Work outside Samsung Galaxy only

It is a Samsung app for Samsung devices. On a Pixel, Xiaomi or OnePlus phone there is no Sound Assistant to install.

When you need to go below the minimum

Six quieter steps under the device minimum Goes below the floor

Quiet Dial works one level down. Instead of dividing the volume range, it lowers Android's own output on top of it: one floating slider with normal volume above your device's minimum line and six quiet steps below it, 5 dB each, down to 30 dB under the hardware minimum. What -30 dB means in practice.

It lowers media, ringtones, notifications, alarms and app calls such as WhatsApp when the phone plays them as media. Regular phone calls run on a separate path that no app can lower. On a few phone and Bluetooth headset pairs the quiet steps have no effect, so check yours during the seven free days.

When the finest step is still too loud

Sound Assistant makes the steps smaller. Quiet Dial adds the steps that are missing below them. No root, no ads, no tracking, no account.

After you install, open it once and allow it to display over other apps. That is the entire setup. Everything is open for seven days; after that the dial needs one payment, once, inside the app. No subscription.

FAQ

Does Sound Assistant make the lowest volume quieter?
A little. With Change step volume set to 1, each key press moves the media slider in much finer steps, so the first step above mute sits lower than the default first step. It cannot go below the bottom of the slider's own range.
How do I get more volume steps on a Samsung phone?
Install Sound Assistant from the Galaxy Store, open it, and set Change step volume to 1. By default each key press moves the media slider by 10 fine steps; at 1 every press is one fine step.
Why is my Galaxy still too loud with Sound Assistant?
Because finer steps divide the volume range more finely without extending it downwards. If the quietest level your Galaxy produces is itself too loud, no number of extra steps inside that range gets you below it.
Is Sound Assistant available on Pixel, Xiaomi or OnePlus?
No. It is a Samsung app for Galaxy devices, from the Galaxy Store and Samsung's Good Lock family.
What can go below the lowest volume step on a Galaxy?
Lowering Android's own output below the minimum. Quiet Dial does that with six quieter steps of 5 dB each, down to 30 dB under the hardware minimum, on Galaxy phones and tablets as well as other Android devices. On a few phone and Bluetooth headset pairs the quiet steps have no effect, so check yours during the seven free days.
Does it lower regular phone calls?
No app can lower a regular cellular call, because it runs on a separate audio path. Quiet Dial lowers app calls such as WhatsApp when the phone plays them as media, along with media, ringtones, notifications and alarms.
